Broken items are a given in any pottery practice. Instead of mourning a piece I lost, I now turn the broken pieces into one-of-a-kind jewelry.

And just like I have to learn to let go of what I expected to make, by purchasing one of these, you let go of the expectation of getting a very specific piece. Every one will have a slightly different size or shape, even though the general design is the same. We’re truly sharing the experience together.

An adorable little squirt named Pepper recently celebrated her birthday and it’s so beautiful to know that this custom heirloom celebration plate was not only part of this milestone, but will be for years to come.

Spending time surrounded by the extraordinary has a way of bringing things into focus.

Experiencing work that has endured for hundreds of years reminds me that beautiful things don’t have to be fast. They don’t have to follow trends. They just have to be made with care.

This landscape was inspired by the rolling hills of Tuscany. It’s the first oil painting I’ve made purely for myself in longer than I can remember. It’s also my first oil painting in more than 30 years. I’m hooked.

It feels a little like coming home.

And if you look closely, you’ll spy something that hints this isn’t just the beginning.

But somewhere along the way I stopped making things for myself.

These photos are the first time I’ve let someone capture me as the artist I actually am. Not the designer. Not the community builder. The artist. I couldn’t have trusted anyone better than @emilyjaneofficial.ca to capture that.

I’m not quite ready to share them yet. But I will be soon.

Working on a custom tile commission today and thought I’d share a little behind-the-scenes.

My client sent me a bunch of inspiration photos, and I got busy sketching out the design. Everything was going great until I realized I was drawing 🍒 instead of 🍓. 😂 😅

This is exactly why I work on delicate greenware - changes are easy before anything gets fired!

I always enjoy this part of the process - taking a collection of photos, memories and ideas and figuring out how they’ll come together in a piece that’s completely unique to the person who commissioned it.

Next up: 18 more tiles, then fire 🔥

Thirty years.

That’s how long it has been since I last painted in oils.

For decades, acrylics, crafting and digital work have carried my ideas. But standing in Italy this spring, I kept finding myself stopped by the light. The warm stone of Florence at sunset. The dusty gold of Tuscan hills. The way shadows seemed to glow rather than darken.

Some things simply ask to be painted in oils.

So I came home with a small treasure trove from Florence, most of them made by @zecchicolorifirenze — a legendary artist supply shop that feels less like a store and more like a pilgrimage site for painters. Walking through its doors is a little like stepping into an old apothecary devoted to colour and artists needs.

Among the paints that followed me home:

• Naples Yellow Light: a beautiful, creamy yellow prized for its ability to create luminous skin tones and capture the warmth of sunlight without becoming harsh or acidic.

• Terra Verde: the classic green earth used in verdaccio underpaintings by Renaissance masters, creating the subtle depth and lifelike quality that glows through flesh tones centuries later.

• Caput Mortuum: a rich reddish-violet earth pigment whose name translates to “dead head” from the language of alchemy. It creates beautiful, natural shadows in skin, adding depth and complexity where black would feel too heavy.

Along with Umbers, Ochres, Siennas, Ultramarine, and Ivory Black, they feel less like supplies and more like memories in tubes.

Now comes the exciting part: seeing if my hands remember what to do.

These two murals are officially out in the world. ✨

Over the past months, I’ve had the incredible honour of collaborating with my dear friend and fellow artist @erinstaggart to bring scenes inspired by Cottonwood Island into the Civic Centre - a space that, for many visitors, may become their very first (if not only) impression of Prince George.

What made this experience so meaningful was that these murals were truly created together. Not divided into separate sections. Not one artist leading while the other executed. Every piece was shaped through conversation, shared decision making, problem solving, experimentation and trust.

Our approaches to painting are different in many ways, and weaving those perspectives together became one of the most rewarding parts of the process. We challenged each other, inspired each other, and had countless conversations about art, colour, storytelling, and technique that so rarely happen in the solitude of studio practice.

It feels very special to leave behind something that reflects not only the beauty of this place, but also the beauty of collaboration itself.

So grateful to everyone who supported this project along the way and especially to Erin for being such a thoughtful, generous, and wildly talented creative partner.

Didn’t capture great audio of all the bells. Some tinkle tinkle and some tonkle tonkle, but each tune is lovely in its own right.

As for the keys inside, well that’s because in @tattersbyhollow Mrs Clementine the Goose is always losing her keys, but it’s okay because Mr Bumble the Skunk, caretaker of the Hollow’s blossoms, leaves them tucked amongst the petals for her to find as the flowers gently sway in the wind.

Even when all feels lost, we can still be found.

Sometimes I’ll only ever make one or two of something because I’ll figure out that while the idea is cute I actually hate making it. These daily pill bottles in progress are one such thing. There will only ever be two sets of these. I’ll see these through but there won’t be more.

And it’s not because they’re tedious. I make lots of tedious things. They just don’t make my heart sing, for no apparent reason.
